Apartments by the Sea

The project consists of six duplex apartments near the coast. Inspired by a sea shell, the building has a solid outer edge and an open side facing the sea. Each home combines a compact three-bedroom unit with a large verandah-like living space, shaped by breeze, light, and views.

The design improves the initial idea of single-floor apartments on stilt. Duplex homes create better light, ventilation, and spatial quality. Openings face east to catch breeze. The south, west, and north sides are more solid, reducing heat and improving comfort.

Like a sea shell, the building opens to the breeze and protects from heat.

Design Approach

The design draws from the idea of a sea shell. A solid, white outer wall wraps the south, west, and north sides, protecting the building from heat with small, deep-set openings. In contrast, the east side opens towards the sea, allowing breeze, light, and views into the homes. The initial brief of simple single-floor apartments on stilt was rethought as duplex units. This creates better cross ventilation, double-height spaces, and a stronger connection between levels. Staggered floor plates form terraces and shaded verandahs. The result is a compact, climate-responsive building shaped by orientation, section, and coastal living.
